Kalimantan

Kalimantan, sharing its border with Malaysian East Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam, is the world’s third largest island.

Dense green jungles shelter a diverse world of flora and fauna. Bekantans (Proboscis monkeys), river dolphins, orangutans, crocodiles, clouded leopards, giant butterflies, crab-eating macaques and the legendary hornbill all live here and some cannot be found anywhere else.

Adventurous visitors are lured to Kalimantan by the vast mysterious rainforests, mangrove forests and swamps where exotic indigenous species of flora and fauna live.

Kalimantan is known as the land of the Dayaks. The indigenous Dayak tribes traditionally live in communal longhouses called lamin, umaq daru or betang. These long houses are three meters high to protect against wild animals and flooding. Every September, Dayaks all over the island gather in Tenggarong, East Kalimantan for the annual Erau Festival which features dancing, rituals, songs and canoe races.
