A beautiful hideaway in the mountains

Submitted by Agustian Hermanto on July 7, 2009 – 7:32 pm Comments

Located in the deep tranquil village of Ciparay, a subdistrict of Garut in West Java, Kampung Sampireun offers a serene retreat far away from the hectic city life. This is a place that I love to escape to and just relax.

It was drizzling when I arrived at Kampung Sampireun last year and I was welcomed by the resort staff in traditional Sundanese attire. They served me a welcome drink called “bandrek”, made from coconut fat, red sugar and pandan leaves. What impressed me at first of Kampung Sampireun are the charming atmosphere and its natural beauty. Later on, I was escorted to one of the 20 bamboo bungalows by a canoe.

Kampung Sampireun is designed to provide you with a very unique experience. In the afternoon, a traditional Sundanese orchestra, called “Calung”, floats around the lake serenading those who are relaxing on their balconies. It doesn’t matter where you are at the resort as the soothing music carries softly across the water and can be heard from quite a distance.

Kampung life and life at the resort blend into one, allowing a total cultural immersion when you visit. The village rice fields are right behind the resort, water buffaloes can be seen ploughing the fields, and standing as a backdrop to all this is a magnificent volcano. Enjoy all this scenery while playing “Congklak”, a fun traditional game.

As the sun set, I sat at the balcony and listened to “Kecapi Suling”. I felt at peace by hearing the sound of traditional Sundanese song playing softly in the distance. Even though I only stayed for one night, time stopped in Kampung Sampireun and I felt an eternity of calmness. It is truly a beautiful hideaway in the mountains!
